Preface: I started writing this post over five weeks ago and as I let it sit and gained distance from it, I grew more and more self conscious about publishing it.
Happy to hear your happy updates! And heck yes to just doing it, I have this same issue and so hear you- perfection just really doesn't exist, so we can never reach it! We'll never get there. We'll never do the thing. Better to keep moving.
Congratulations on your move, Alice! I'm a long time follower of your work on Instagram, nice to see you over here. We're around the same age and your preface resonated so hard. Here's to redefining “perfect” in our mid-late thirties and beyond!
I am so happy to connect with you in this space! We also moved from Brooklyn (Greenpoint) after ten years of BK life, and the change has been better than I expected. Granted, we didn’t go very far (Jersey City), but it feels SO different, it might as well be across the country. I like having more amenities, and a quieter neighborhood. Cheers to big changes!
I remember your blog and am happy to see you writing again!
I really resonate with this post because my partner and I recently had a similar experience. We live in a smaller city (St. Louis) and always felt like we *needed* to move to a big city. We’ve also travelled quite a bit together over the last two years, and last week we realized that St. Louis has the culture, travel accessibility, food, etc. that we say we want in larger cities — but with a more reasonable cost vs quality of life ratio (and a community we’d hate to lose). I think it’s great that you realized you don’t need to live in a name brand city to have a good life. And, like you said, the big city is always there for a visit.
Welcome to Substack!!! I’ve been writing on here since late June, and it’s given me the courage and space I needed to start writing again (something I’ve sorely missed these past several years). It’s been really exciting for me — wishing the same for you! As always, appreciate your honesty here in your inaugural post. Looking forward to reading 🙏 cheers!
Congrats on your move!

Happy to have found you here, Alice. I remember stumbling on your Flickr back in the old days and really enjoying reading your Lingered Upon blog.

I'm glad to hear it resonated! And traveling always makes me realize NYC is not the center of the universe hah.
Excited you’re on Substack now! 🖤
omg thank you!
Long time fan of your photography work...glad to see more of you on this space.
